JÁNOS BRÜCKNER
János Brückner (b. 1984 Budapest, Hungary) is a Berlin-based visual artist whose interdisciplinary practice spans performance, installation, painting, and moving image. Brückner holds an MA in Painting from the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts and an MA in Hungarian Language and Literature from Eötvös Loránd University. He later completed the postgraduate MA Art in Context at the Universität der Künste Berlin, where his research further sharpened the conceptual and political dimensions of his work.
Brückner’s practice examines the entanglement of personal and collective histories, focusing on how political power, ideology, and cultural memory shape subjectivity, emotional life, and social behavior. Through strategies of performance, role-play, substitution, and exaggeration, his work centers the body as a site where historical narratives, inherited trauma, and political pressure become visible. Error, failure, and discomfort function as productive artistic tools.
Referencing the legacy of the Hungarian neo-avant-garde, popular culture, and everyday visual languages, Brückner interrogates nationalism, whiteness, masculinity, and the politics of representation. Brückner’s projects blur boundaries between sincerity and irony, private emotion and public gesture, fiction and lived reality, revealing how ideology operates through affect, habits, and cultural norms.
Brückner has presented solo exhibitions internationally, including at Übermorn (Zürich), NOD Gallery (Prague), Kunsthalle Košice (VUNU Gallery), ENA Viewing Space (Budapest), TURBA Gallery (Hannover), and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Dunaújváros. His work has been shown in major group exhibitions and biennials such as the Ostrale Biennale in Dresden, Ludwig Museum Budapest, Ujazdowski Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw, and Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Vienna. His works are included in several public collections, including the Petőfi Literary Museum in Budapest and the National Library of Latvia.
